On The Premier League
Who’s been the best player in the Premier League this season and what makes them so good?
I probably have to go with Salah when picking the best player in the Premier League this season. The way Liverpool has been going, it would be wrong to pick anyone outside of Liverpool's team, and it’s been Salah who's scoring goals.
I wouldn't go as far as to say it's the best Salah we've seen at Liverpool because he’s been tremendous for the last 10 years. But to do it at his age - and obviously the contract situation doesn't seem to bother him too much - he's been fantastic.
Who’s been the biggest flop in the Premier League this season?
It would be harsh or wrong to pick a player, but I think if you look at United, it's gone from bad to worse. Amorim came in with a lot of hopes and credit that he's the man.
Because with Ten Hag, I was talking about him leaving, but he wins the FA Cup, he stays on, and they didn't really progress. Nothing really changes.
Amorim comes in. With what he's done at Sporting, you think he's the guy who's going to turn it around. Even his points average is worse than before. Another low against Tottenham. United have been dreadful.
I know that opposition fans are probably thriving and being happy; celebrating their downfall, but I think the league needs a good Man United. They won't be taking part in the Champions League. They were there last year, but then they got knocked out in a group with Munich, Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen. It's sad to see.
Obviously I'm a supporter of Liverpool, I support all my former clubs, but to see what’s happened to them over the last 10 years since Ferguson left is a shame really.
Who are the young players based on what you’ve seen this season that are destined to blossom into stars over the next couple of years?
I think Curtis Jones has been very good. I don't think that Gravenberch is still classed as a young player. There’s Lewis-Skelly at Arsenal who's doing well. There's always players coming through. But obviously then the next step is a big one. But it's great to see young players getting chances. It's always great to see managers that have got the bottle to play younger players, because experienced players make fewer mistakes. A lot of managers are reluctant to bring young ones in, but there's still enough managers out there who do.
Who has been the best central midfielder in the Premier League this season?
Gravenberch has been brilliant. Caicedo showed why Chelsea paid an awful lot of money for him. I think Caicedo is a player who's really shone in the tough circumstances at Chelsea. Obviously, there was a lot of unrest, a lot of managerial change.
But Gravenberch is probably the player. In Munich he hardly played, wasn't fancied by the manager. He goes to Liverpool, a new manager comes, and he's shown his physical presence, his agility, also his passing ability. I think he's been absolutely fantastic.
It’s all getting a bit congested from Forest down – who are you putting in the top four this season?
I'd probably go for City third and then I'd go Chelsea and Newcastle. I don’t think Forest will stay there, and it’ll be hard for Bournemouth to stay there. Villa are always capable of going on a late run but obviously they’ve got the Champions League to worry about as well.
It would be great to see Forest in the Champions League. Germany had five places last season and won't get a fifth place this year.I think it's very likely that England will have a fifth spot. I think Newcastle might be the ones who benefit from that.
Should Amorim stick to his principles?
He's got to do what he thinks is best for the team. If he thinks the way they play is best for the team, moving forward, then he’s got to do it. He’s there to make the decisions to the best of his knowledge. The thing with him is now, if things stay as they are, 15th in the league, I think it'll be very hard to keep him in the summer.
He knows he’s got to try to get results somehow from now till the end of the season, because otherwise he’ll be out of the job.
Maybe he says, I'll try something different tactically. If it works, it works. If not, I'll move on.
If things don't improve and progress in the next 2-3 months, I think it will be very tough to start a new season. There was a situation with Ten Hag where he was under pressure for a long time and then, as I said, he wins the FA Cup and that gives him another few months.
I'm not sure this is the way forward or the way Man United should move forward.Because if things don't improve, you go into the next season and you need to try to create - as Klopp said when he came to Liverpool - a situation where you turn from doubters to believers.
You've got to have the feeling even as a fan. This season, we're going to improve. We see where it's going to take us. Because if they carry on next season, as they do now, they'll go into the season thinking, well, if we finish in the top half, we've done all right. And obviously this is not the standard United set for the last 30 or 40 years.
What do you think the Liverpool camp would have made of Arsenal not signing an attacking player in January given their injury list?
Obviously, this is unfortunate because Havertz hasn’t had too many injuries since he came to the club. I said that before, I don't see them winning the Premier League or the Champions League unless they sign a centre-forward like Ollie Watkins.
I don't know how serious that was, but Duran went to Saudi, so I think it was always unlikely they're gonna let Watkins go, still being in the Champions League.
I think the team is well equipped, but the lack of a centre forward is obviously what I think harms their chances. Now, Saka has been out for a while. I'm not sure when he's back, but I think he'll be back in the next few weeks. And it's always hard to replace somebody who's only missing for another four or six weeks, so I can see why they didn’t move for a wide attacker.
The only real question mark I have about Arsenal’s squad is the centre forward position. And I think even Darwin Nunez, I think Nunez would be gold for Arsenal. Because I think if you've got somebody up top who bullies defenders, who draws defenders in, he always gets the attention of two or three defenders.
Obviously, he’s a big unit. He’s quick. The game changes. If you've got somebody up top with a physical presence, with pace, it's a different ballgame. They always find space, Arsenal, but it also makes it easier for the likes of Saka and Martinelli and Odegaard when they get into these pockets because quick players stretch teams. They simply haven't got it. I think even a Nunez would be a brilliant addition to the squad, but it’s too late for that now and they have to make do with what they have.
On Manchester City
Are City turning things around?
I watched the game against Madrid. Obviously, we've seen it this year that they have struggled at home as well because they had that run where they didn't win a game for nine or 10 games.
I was surprised how Real Madrid dominated the game at the Etihad because they had bad results this season at home, but I don't think I've seen a team control the game as much as Madrid did.
I remember the last couple of seasons they played each other. I think even last season Madrid couldn't get out their own box, let alone their own half. They bombarded them with pressure for 90 minutes or 120 minutes when they lost on penalties.Even in the first half when they went ahead, they scored a brilliant goal, but Madrid was a better team, they had two or three really good opportunities and then you get a penalty, you go two more ahead and I'm thinking, well, they're going to win this game now and take a real fighting chance to the Bernabeu.
Then they give the game away again in the last 10 minutes which they also did in Paris and obviously it's a huge game now on Wednesday.
If they were to get knocked out, which I think they will, the question will be, is that Guardiola-City era coming to an end?
Yes, they had a good result at the weekend, but they had the odd good result in the past. They beat Bruges after going behind, which made sure they got into the playoffs.
Marmoush is a player, I've seen a lot of him. He can get a goal. It's a brilliant opportunity for him. Sometimes a player like him can galvanise a team, but I think a lot will depend on that game on Wednesday.
I've got to say, Newcastle were a bit disappointing because the game was over before it really started. They were three down in the first 30 minutes. So that was a bit disappointing. And with City at the moment, you don't really know what you get. That's something we haven't said for 10 years. But I think the question marks are a lot bigger than the exclamation marks with City at the moment.
If City fail to qualify for the Champions League KO rounds, would that be the biggest black mark on Pep Guardiola’s managerial career?
Yeah, well obviously it's a new format. We never had that playoff round. Obviously, there's a reason why they have to play that game, because up until the last game it wasn't even clear whether they would get in the playoffs if they had lost to Bruges.
Things happen if you’re in the play-offs, and if you get drawn against Real Madrid, you know, it's always a 50-50 game. There's always a chance you get knocked out.
I think you've got to see the whole picture and obviously where they are in the league. They're not guaranteed to play Champions League football next season.Obviously, fifth place would help dramatically if England were to get it. But when they brought new players in this winter, it takes a lot of energy and also patience to, in a way, create a new team. And the question will be, has Pep got the energy? Because there were times you could see his frustration. And that will be the question. Is he the man to take him into that new era or change his team, which Ferguson did? But obviously that was a different time. That was 20 years ago. I'm not too sure.
Was signing Ilkay Gundogan a mistake? A younger player might have been a better replacement for the injured Rodri
When you do bring players back, Dortmund did it years ago, they did it every time players left. With Kagawa from Man Utd, it didn’t really work.
I think what I can say from experience is that when you had a great time or brilliant time at a football club and you come back two or three years later, it's very rare that things are replicated from what happened before.
If City miss one thing, I think it's youth and it's energy. If you look at Gundogan, if you look at De Bruyne, if you look at Bernardo Silva, They are probably in the autumn or late autumn of their careers now, even though Silva is only 30.
It's a young man's game these days and you can have the old player, but obviously in the middle of the park, in the engine room where games are won and lost, if you've got three players over 30, it's mighty tough because you just can't give up in your position.I think Gundogan wanted to leave, he wanted to come back for whatever reason, things didn't really work out in Barcelona. Was it a mistake? I wouldn't say a mistake.
Obviously, it's another play that came on a free transfer. I don't think there was too much financial commitment. But it probably didn't work out as I expected, you would say.
What do you make of Guardiola calling Gonzalez a mini Rodri?
Well you can only hope from City's point of view that he does fill the Rodri shaped hole in the team. Stones played there previously, and I think Stones is a player who can play there even though he’s in his 30s now.
I'm a bit surprised that he wasn't used more often in that position because he's a very smart player, he's good on the ball, he reads the game well.
But obviously it's not his best position and Gonzalez did really well, developing in Porto. It's very important to have that holding player because we see with Gravenberch, we see with Partey at Arsenal. Caicedo at Chelsea, and if you have a look at the best Champions League teams in the past, this is a key position.
Whether he can adjust to a new country, the game’s quicker. He had a perfect start, 3-0 up, it wasn’t the hardest game for him. He could slide in. There will be bigger tests ahead, a big one now on Wednesday.Hopefully, whether he’s good enough, whether he does it, the debut was very promising, but obviously what he does from now on remains to be seen.
On Liverpool
Arne Slot has been as cool as a cucumber during his Liverpool tenure. Were you surprised to see him lose it at full-time after the Everton result and will a two-match touchline ban have a negative impact on performances?
I love how he handles himself on the touchline because I've always been a fan of managers who ooze class and calmness on the touchline. And he's the epitome of that.He stands there like he's not bothered. Even referee decisions, he takes it on the chin, moves on.
Was I surprised at his reaction against Everton? Yes, I was surprised. I don't think it harms his reputation or his character, because it doesn’t happen often, then he’s allowed. He’s under pressure, and he didn’t agree with the injury time even if it was justified. Play on for another two minutes. I don’t know what he said to the ref.
Arne wasn't even finished and he already showed him the red card. I'm not sure what he told him, but this is part of a derby game, the last one at Goodison.Obviously what went on with Doucoure and Curtis Jones, it made things look a little bit worse than it actually was, but we've seen managers sent off before.
I think he's allowed to have the odd rant, even though we don't want to see it, but think it's part of the game.
Should Liverpool have bought in January?
Obviously, financially they always do things differently. Liverpool are not the biggest payers, and I think they're reluctant to pay over the odds in the summer, let alone in the winter where it's even harder to bring somebody in because the teams don't want to lose their best players.
You probably have to pay over the odds and probably have to pay over the odds when it comes to wages. If anyone left, I would have said, yeah, sign someone. I was talking about Nunez leaving, but I still think that Nunez has got a big role to play. Maybe not with his goalscoring, but also what he brings to the team. And the other thing is, if something works, you don't want to upset the dressing room because if you bring someone in, do you bring a squad player in? I think the squad is strong enough as it is.
They haven't got too many injuries at the moment. So, if you bring someone in to start, it might upset the team as well. And I think you've got to be 100% certain that this is a player, character-wise, that fits into the team. And I think they've done the right thing.
If you're not 100% certain, I'm not sure whether they were too keen to bring somebody in. I think if there was an opportunity, they probably would have jumped on it, but I don't think there was a real need to do anything in the winter.
Any concerns over Liverpool’s title challenge?
Well, I had concerns during the Wolves game. I watched the game yesterday and I think Wolves are better than their league position. If you look at their players, I don’t think they’ll have anything to do with relegation.
Watching the game, they scored a goal, they got a penalty. The penalty was taken back, rightly so, because Jota wasn't touched. And I just felt that there was, I don't want to say there was something missing, but I didn't have a good feeling about it. Wolves were also really dangerous, and you don't really see that often because Liverpool is always in control of games.
Maybe that late equaliser played a part in it and obviously Arsenal won the day before. The lead was down to four points that got a bit of edgy thinking - we need to win this to make it seven again. And when the goal went in from Cunha, I thought they were not gonna win this game. This is something I probably never felt or never said about Liverpool this season because you always felt, even when they conceded equalisers, you always felt they were gonna score again.
But yesterday there was something in the air which I didn't like, and I think in the end to hang on, was a huge result and these are the games you have to win, especially after that late equaliser against Everton.
I think that point against Everton was useful, too. It will be very valuable as wellbecause six or seven points makes a big difference because in theory you can lose two games and if they win, you are still a point ahead.
I think psychologically the point was important at Everton even though obviously three would have been better. But I think yesterday they made up for that because that was a huge win against a dangerous opponent.
Who would you want to keep if you could only keep one of TAA/VVD/Salah?
Van Dijk is the captain and he’s been the leader of the team. Not only in terms of performance but also what he gives to the team and also not only the team, the club. Because if you look at Liverpool now and you talk about Liverpool, the first one that comes to your mind is Van Dijk. He is the main man. Usually, I would say Van Dijk is the more important player to keep, because of his leadership qualities.
To find a player who scores goals, I don't think Mo Salah can be replaced because of the contribution he's given this season and every season he’s been at the club. But at Liverpool, wingers or centre-forwards, they always score goals. You'll find one who will get you 12-15 goals. Whether they get you 25 is a different matter.
But then again, maybe you can share the goals and somebody else maybe scores two or three more goals and, in the end, the main thing is what is coming out at the end of the season.
It's no good having a striker who scores 40 goals if the team is not successful. So I think you find somebody who scores goals and has made an impact, even though he won't be in Salah's class. I still think that Van Dijk is probably the harder one to replace.
What are you hearing on the deals?
I heard a few weeks ago that Van Dijk could stay. Then again, Liverpool always did things a little bit differently to other teams and other clubs.
The main thing is it doesn't seem to harm the performances because Salah is probably the outstanding player. Van Dijk is just a rock at the back. He's absolutely brilliant the way he plays, the way he leads the team. His stature, he oozes confidence and class. He gives the team so much security and takes so much responsibility. He makes people around him better.
Trent, we know what he’s capable of. I just wonder if there was the odd bad result or if they were to lose a game, maybe against PSG in the next round of the Champions League if they get them, and the way they are going, I don't think it's out of the equation that PSG could knock them out, I wonder if they will look to end the speculation.
If things get tight in the league, they’re more likely to say what actually is happening because the longer this goes on, I think the less likely it is for them to stay. There will be clubs approaching these agents on a daily basis. They are all out of contract, so for the last six weeks, they are allowed to sign not even a pre-contract, they can sign a contract with a new club. And I think they have to keep that in mind.
I would try my utmost to keep Salah, and I would try a lot to keep Trent. If Trent wants to go, he's the youngest out of the three. If he wants to go to Madrid, then good luck to him.
Conor Bradley, they've got a brilliant player in Trent’s position. Gomez can play there too. It's a strange situation, I'm hearing as much as everybody else. But I also think because there's clubs where a lot of things come out, especially in Germany, there's a lot of journalists, everybody's trying to dig in and trying to get some information. I think it also shows how together they are that nothing comes out. Because there must be 10 people knowing where they stand on contracts, and nothing leaks.
And I think that's a good sign, even though obviously it would be best if one, two or three of them would sign at some stage a new contract.
Is Salah rivalling Gerrard’s influence at Anfield at this point?
The comparison with Gerrard is probably not wrong. He's getting compared to Dalglish, to Rush, Owen, Fowler, Torres, Suarez. If you look at the goals, the players or the people he's getting compared with are all centre-forwards.
He's playing on the wing. To amass the amount of goals from the right, is just ridiculous. Where would he rank in all-time history? I think probably in the top five. If you ask me, when I left and obviously, I was lucky to meet some of the old guys and obviously play with some fantastic players, I would have always said to get in the top five all-time Liverpool greats, you've got to achieve something which is probably not possible.
Well, he did. What you shouldn't forget also is there’s never any trouble from him, because sometimes with these flair players, players who make the difference, they are sometimes a bit different because they know how good they are and sometimes they can upset teammates for the way they behave but there hasn't been anything with him.
Everything he did was always in the best interest of the team. I know there was a bit of a hoo-ha with Mane when he was there. When one came off, the other one did not, and he wanted to win the golden boot. But I think he was always in good spirits and to have a player like this, who is so dedicated and still be at this level is also great. It's also a great role model for younger players because if you're in the dressing room and you see the way Van Dijk prepares for training, Salah prepares, the way they train, you don't even think about being big-headed. You just get on with it and this is down to these two guys.
Are Liverpool about to enter a season-defining period?
Yeah, huge. Absolutely huge. And I know they're very dominant at the moment and obviously they got themselves into a great position. But these games are no gimmes.
You've got to be on top of your game. If you’ve got Newcastle at home, City away Villa away, then you've got the cup final and then potentially you've got two games against PSG who are probably the most in-form side in Europe, so the next six weeks will determine where they're going to go.
They could win their first title this season.
I'd say if they get out of the three games of Newcastle, Villa, City with at least a four-point cushion, I think they're going to win the league.Because City away is tough. They won't win all three games, I don't think. Then again, we have to wait for Arsenal, what they do. It's season-defining, these six weeks. It's strange to say, really, because for the players so far, you haven't put a foot wrong.Maybe apart from the game at home to Forest, which always happens early in the season.
People talk about the league, and they should win it.Obviously, the Champions League, they're probably the favourites. Now, potentially, in six weeks' time, you could be level on points with Arsenal, you could have lost a cup final and maybe you could chase a deficit in the second leg against Paris.
And this is in a season where there was so much talk about how they could win it. And I just hope they haven't got that thought where they can lose because so far, they haven't won anything.Because of the way they played and played so well, maybe they got ahead of themselves thinking they've been further than where they actually are because the Champions League starts now.
Up to now, how you get into the last 16 doesn't matter, whether it's the playoffs or not or top of the league, it doesn't matter. Now we start from scratch, and obviously in the league they're in a very strong position but the next three games are tough, and obviously vital.
On Manchester City vs Liverpool
Any extra motivation from a Liverpool standpoint to really rub salt into City’s wounds given the rivalry between the two clubs from over the years?
I don't think they're too bothered about what happens with Man City. You know, salt in the wounds that could be rubbed in by Madrid on Wednesday because that would be a huge blow for if they were to get knocked out and not reach the last 16.
They have got to cut it all out, all the emotion. These two teams pushed each other on. We've seen title races where 100 points were needed, which is unheard of.
I think there was one season where both won the last 12 games of the season, which in the modern game, is almost impossible to do.
They will go with full confidence, and what happens on Wednesday will have an impact, because if City were to get knocked out maybe you can say it's a different competition. City will want to be in the Champions League again so will need to get something out of the game against Liverpool, but I think it will be a huge blow for their confidence. You know, the players might be thinking maybe this is our last dance this season.I'm not too sure whether City will get many more shots at the Champions League. So, I think that the game has a big impact and if they were to get knocked out, I would favour Liverpool a little bit more.
Who would you take from the current City team and put into the Liverpool side?
The one player that I would love to pinch from Manchester City and put into the Liverpool squad is Phil Foden.
We know that he plays on the right mainly for City, and that’s Salah’s position, but I wouldn’t put him there. I would put him in the middle of the park with a licence to roam and get on the ball; make things happen.
Liverpool play with a three-man midfield, and I could see Foden slotting into that team beautifully.
I think Foden is a lovely player. He's certainly a player I wouldn't mind seeing in the red shirt.
He would be the one player that I would steal from City. I think he would be incredible in this Liverpool team, even if he isn’t having the best season by his standards.
On Celtic vs Bayern
Do Celtic have a chance?
There's always a chance that a player is sent off in the first 10 minutes and Celtic might get a penalty, but obviously to get a penalty you have to get into Bayern’s box, which I don't think they managed for probably the first 60 minutes at Parkhead.
Yeah, there's always a chance, but it'll be mighty tough. If they nicked another goal towards the end, which they had a couple of chances to do in the first leg, then maybe. There's always a chance but I think it's almost impossible.
Are they facing a 7-1 defeat thrashing like Dortmund gave them?
Well, the one thing in their favour is Bayern Munich's not playing well. They were absolutely bullied by Leverkusen on Saturday evening. They had the first shot on goal, which was blocked on 74 minutes. That was from a very tight angle from Kane from 15 yards. They had two shots in the whole game. The keeper didn't have a save to make.
So, Munich's not playing well. That's in their favour. I'll never forget when they lost the game 7-1 in Dortmund, Brendan Rogers was asked, what did you make of the game?He said, oh, it's gone. You know, we can't change it and he said, I'd like to play these guys at Parkhead. And I thought there was a huge vote of confidence in his team.
Obviously, they had the home game. They failed to beat Munich, but he's got the utmost confidence in his teams. We know how he works, and he will tell his players, we've got a chance. And as I said, Munich is not playing well. They're always capable of scoring four or five goals, but the way they're going at the moment, I don't think they've got seven goals in them or even five.
So that's one thing in Celtic’s favour. But obviously, if you're 2-0 down at halftime, then you have to think about whether it make sense to still attack, maybe go home with a two or three-nil loss?
Whether you lose 1-0 or 5, it doesn't really matter. But when you realize that you haven't got a chance to progress and maybe it makes sense for the next few weeks as well to not get hit for five or six.
On Newcastle vs Liverpool
Who does the game mean more to?
Newcastle had a couple of opportunities in the last few years, where there have been to cup finals, but unfortunately they didn't do the job. It would be huge and obviously I lost a cup final in 1999 with Newcastle, and we got a fantastic welcome.
I said at the time, I can't even imagine what would have happened if we had won that game against Manchester United in 1999. For the city, for the club, it would be absolutely huge. This makes you grow because you gain confidence, you gain more trust in your teammates.
I think for the next few weeks and months, if they win it, I think it would give them an even better chance to finish in the top four or five to qualify for the Champions League.
I think in Liverpool's case, it's always important, it's a cup final, but these players all won the League Cup, and most of them won the league. I think what makes a big difference is the manager, because at the end of the day, people look back, what have you won?
You won't find a Liverpool manager who says, I've been in three League Cup finals, but I lost all of them, because second place is first loser. It doesn't matter whether you get knocked out in the last 16 or whether you lose the final.End of the day, you haven't won the cup. And I think it will be important for Slot. Also, it will give him a boost for the league and also the Champions League because as I said there's some tough teams left in the competition.
Hopefully they get a little bit lucky, and they don't get PSG. For Liverpool, it just gives you a boost and when you keep winning games and winning trophies, I remember the people always ask, what was the most important trophy at Liverpool? Well, it was the League Cup when we played Birmingham in 2001. We probably shouldn't have won the game.
We ended up going to penalties, we won on penalties. If we hadn't won the League Cup, we wouldn't have won the UEFA Cup, and we wouldn't have won the FA Cup, I'm pretty sure about that.
Because if you lose in a final, whether it's Newcastle, whether it's Birmingham - they were a Championship side at the time - it would have been a huge blow, and you start questioning yourself. You start doubting yourself, you start doubting the team.
And obviously that's no good in a team game where a lot depends on psychology and confidence. So yeah, a huge game for both, but obviously for Newcastle because of the fact they haven't won a trophy for the best part of 60 years. For the area, for the city, for the club, it would be absolutely fantastic.
On Newcastle United
Does the City defeat show how far they are from winning the league?
Yeah, I won't be too harsh on them because obviously they've made up a lot of ground. They've dropped points, and they have injured players. They've really been on a good run lately.
They've been brilliant in the last 8 to 10 games, but there's always a chance when you go to City that you get beat and sometimes there's a chance you get beat heavily. The disappointing thing is that they were never really in the game, they never really gave themselves a chance to get something out of the games. In terms of their title chances then, if you look at Liverpool and Arsenal, at the moment they are behind 15-17 points, which is probably about right.
Then you need to see what happens, whether the Saudis are capable of spending money, whether their financial fair play hampers what they want to spend. I think they're on a good path.I think it would be huge for the club to grow, for the players to grow. It would be vitally important to get in the Champions League because I think this is where you gain experience when you play against the best teams. This is where players get better and you get confidence and you say, well, if you can compete with PSG and compete with the likes of Barcelona, we've got to go to the next step.
If they carry on the progress they made in the last two, three, four years, do we see Newcastle as a Premier League winner? Potentially. They've got a lot of very good players.
Gordon was heavily linked with the move to Liverpool, wasn't he? Isak, the whispers don't stop about him and apparently Liverpool, as well as Arsenal, are registered with an interest. I think every big club would be interested in it if they could get him.
Is Champions League imperative if they want to keep hold of those kinds of players? I think they went to Newcastle when they weren't in the Champions League.
In this case, if you don't play there one more season, maybe the players say, yeah, that's fine. The best players want to play in the Champions League, so I think clubs smell blood now.
They were there last season. Obviously, the penalty in Paris which kind of knocked him out, which shouldn't have been given, which wasn't a penalty.
There might be a player like Isak who says in the summer, well, if you don't play Champions League, then I've got to move on because to win the Champions League, you've got to be in it. And they might be able to keep him for a season if they're not in it. But the Champions League would make things a lot easier because then you're in a strong position you might be able to extend one or two contracts. And I think these two players are really for that. For the Newcastle team, they've been absolutely brilliant. No surprise there's a lot of clubs interested in them.
